The Nurse Who Loved Me - After the Latest Vandal Attack

In my opinion music is made in two fundamental ways.
There are those who offer up watered down interpretations of what
currently happens to be in fashion. Whilst this approach may garner
them interest and support, it tends to lack integrity and longevity.
Then there are those who mean it, shunning what may be popular in order
to create something that is truly their own without concerning
themselves with commercial gain. Fortunately "After the Latest Vandal
Attack" falls into the latter category.

Where the album excels is that it manages to be both
beautifully fragile and heavy as fuck at the same time. From the
opening title track you are sucked in to an epic ride that transcends
genres and successfully works in all levels. The machine gun drumming
and massive riff of the track leads into "Not Cautious", one of the
more abrasive songs on the album. It switches tact instantly with the
Bloc Party style beginnings of "Pass the Blame". "Around Again" sounds
like the Foo Fighters pumped full of happy pills and is perhaps the
most immediate offering. "Like they don't Exist" follows, a mellow,
blissed out slow burner which showcases a tender (and maybe stoned?)
side of the band.

All of which leads to "Surrender", a stunning
centrepiece. Seriously, fuck any other single released last year, it's
an epic masterpiece. It sounds full of angst and desperation and
manages to combine an anthemic and downbeat feel. It's worth buying the
album on the strength of it alone.

Not to say the album finishes there. "You Are" sounds
like Autolux on a downer before gently bursting into life. "Fast Goon"
kicks life back into proceedings before the tremendous baritone lead
"I'll Pretend, I'll Pretend" hits you with one of the finest riffs
you'll hear this year. "Silhouette" is a slow burning number, which
begins to showcase a band comfortable in developing a recognisable
sound that is their own. "So Long" once again offers up delicate
splendour before the awesome "Meatslop" delivers a blistering parting
shot.

The album offers such a wider variety, that you can't
fail to find something that will appeal, it does what it does without
adhering to what is necessarily en vogue.

Therein lies a problem. The Nurse Who Loved Me are
one of the finest unsigned bands the county has to offer, yet they
remain largely ignored. By being brave enough to do what they want and
not actually being afraid to offer up genuine emotion without
sacrificing their integrity, The Nurse are truly a band worth your time
and admiration.
